The project started when it was decided not to use the budget for after party of the PBA. And instead use it for relief and.or rehabilitation efforts after Ondoy and Peping. And what came next next was the BangonPinoy initiative which tried to raise P400,000 and perhaps more. And when the end day did come in the community was able to raise 409,0000 pesos. And because of this we have TechTanod: Digital Barangay – a collaboration between Globe, The Philippine Blog Awards, RockEd, the Philippine Blogging Community, other groups and you.

So what is TechTanod? It is rehabilitation, It is preparedness. It is about participation. It is about learning. It is about teaching. It is about us the community – the Digital Barangay. We will have our first meeting this Saturday so please join us by being there or if not by being on-line.

We are in trying times. All of us have been affected by the onslaught of Ondoy. Each and everyone of us has been affected. I will not mention names but we have had members who have been stranded, isolated and hurt by the flood. We sorely miss their presence as friends, family and co-workers in the Philippine Blog Awards.

People have asked us if we are going to continue with the events. And my answer has been yes.

Why?

First, we will continue with an event that would honor and dignify the bayanihan spirit that has been manifested in the past few days. If the fates are kind the event will be held and it will be a proper and dignified event that best suit the prevailing time.

Second, we will be working and using the event to launch and help initiatives that will help the present crisis.

The Philippine Blog Awards has been in contact with groups that will help in this cause. Of course any suggestion from the community will be greatly appreciated.

We were able to dissect last year’s awards with the help of GMCI. Here are the media values generated from the event. Inclusive are the sponsorships and tie ups for prizes, mainstream media coverage and online coverage by media agencies. Not included are blog posts generated by the Internet community which should definitely not be discounted. In total, we were able to generate close to PHP20 million pesos in media values from mainstream press alone.
